Ein Film von Ritu SarinTenzing Sonam • Karma, a Tibetan filmmaker from New York, comes to Dharamsala – a small town in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, home to the exiled Dalai Lama and the spiritual and political focus of the Tibetan diaspora. Escaping from a deteriorating relationship back home, she is here to make a film about former political prisoners who have escaped from Tibet. Their harrowing stories of courage and suffering heighten her own sense of cultural alienation.

One of Karma’s interviewees is Dhondup, an enigmatic ex-monk who has recently escaped from Tibet after spending four years in prison for his role in anti-Chinese activities. Dhondup confides in Karma that his real reason for coming to India is to fulfill his dying mother’s last wish, to deliver a gahu – a charm box that Tibetans use as a protection amulet – to a man named Loga. He appeals to her for help in finding him.

Karma’s assistant in Dharamsala is Jigme, a local Tibetan boy who is an aspiring rock musician, full of attitude but basically confused, torn between wanting to do something meaningful for a homeland he has never seen and plotting ways of getting to America and the "good life".

Jigme instinctively dislikes Dhondup and tries to discourage her from getting involved. But something about Dhondup’s quiet dignity touches Karma and she decides to help him. As they set out to find Loga, Karma finds herself unwittingly falling in love with Dhondup even as she is sucked into the vortex of his quest, which becomes a journey into Tibet’s fractured past and a voyage of self-discovery.

With these words, spoken by old professor Casares (Federico Luppi), begins the lugubrious fable that will take place at the Santa Lucia School during the last days of the Spanish Civil War. The school is an imposing stone building that shelters the orphans of the Republican militia and politicians, as well as other children who, because of the conflict, have no one to take care of them.

To Santa Lucia, set in a desolate plateau, arrives Carlos (Fernando Tielve), 10 years old, who from his arrival will meet with the hostility of Jaime (Iñigo Garcés), the oldest of the children and clearly the leader of the malnourished troupe of around twenty orphans. Besides Casares, the adult personnel of the school is completed by Carmen (Marisa Paredes), the hardened headmistress, widow of a leftist poet; Alma (Berta Ojea), another teacher; Conchita (Irene Visedo), the cook; and the young caretaker Jacinto (Eduardo Noriega). Agressive and greedy, prone to the fascism that seems about to triumph in the war, Jacinto is infested by hate towards those same walls that saw him grow up and now give him shelter and employment.

Little by little, Carlos will uncover the shady links that unite all of the inhabitants of the school, including the ominous secret that haunts them. With horror, Carlos will discover the tragedy of Santi (Junio Valverde), a student who was brutally murdered, and whose pale specter now begs Carlos for help... and revenge.

Who killed Santi on that horrible night when a bomb spat from one of the planes in the conflict fell right in the center of the courtyard, miraculously without exploding, remaining there like a twisted symbol?

Overcoming his fear, moving from pain to hope, Carlos will finally discover the identity of the killer, and leading the squalid group of children, will fulfill the wishes of Santi’s spirit.

What begins as a conflict over a small, rundown bungalow spirals into a clash of cultures that propels everyone involved towards an inescapable, and ultimately heartbreaking, climax. “House of Sand and Fog” exposes the unsettling truth that it is sometimes our hopes and not our hatreds that divide us.

Die Eiszeit kommt ... • Twenty-thousand years ago. The Earth is a wondrous, prehistoric world filled with danger, not the least of which is the beginning of the Ice Age. To avoid a really bad frostbite, the planet’s majestic creatures - and a few small, slothful ones - begin migrating south. The exceptions are a woolly mammoth named Manfred, a high plains drifter who does things his own way; and a terminally lazy sloth named Sid, who enjoys doing nothing, his own way.

When Sid "adopts" Manfred as his protector, the mammoth tries everything he can to unload his newfound baggage. But that’s only the beginning of his frustrations: Manny has been roped by Sid into helping reunite an abandoned human baby named Roshan with his family. They are joined by Diego, a sinister saber-toothed tiger who befriends Sid and Manny, all the while seeing the infant as a tasty treat.

As Sid, Manny and Diego make their way across the vast, ice-covered landscape, another creature, a prehistoric squirrel / rat known as Scrat, tries desperately to carry out his mission in life - to bury an acorn - which, alas, triggers calamitous events.

While Scrat wages war with the Ice Age itself over his precious nut, Manny, Sid, Diego and Roshan embark on an incredible journey. They narrowly escape avalanches, battle over food with a hapless flock of doomsday dodos, explore the mysteries of a diaper, careen through a prehistoric roller coaster of ice funnels and traverse ice bridges over lakes of volcanic lava. They become the weirdest herd of this, or any, age.

As for Scrat... He is probably still trying to retrieve that cursed acorn.

Aus der Metropolitan Opera New York • ERSTER AKT. Vor dem Haus des Dr. Bartolo bringt der verkleidete Graf Almaviva Rosina ein Ständchen („Ecco ridente”). Dr. Bartolo hält Rosina jedoch im Haus eingesperrt. Almaviva bezahlt die Musiker und beschliesst, bis zum Morgengrauen zu warten, da er hofft, sie zu sehen. Der Barbier Figaro, der Zutritt zu den Häusern von Sevilla hat und alle Geheimnisse und Skandale der Stadt kennt, tritt auf und beschreibt sein geschäftiges Leben („Largo al factotum“). Der Graf singt eine weitere Serenade für Rosina und gibt sich als der arme Student Lindoro aus. Figaro entwirft einen Plan: der Graf soll sich als betrunkener Soldat ausgeben, der bei Dr. Bartolo stationiert sei, um Rosina zu begegnen – mit der Dr. Bartolo sich selbst zu verheiraten gedenkt. Dem Grafen gefällt dieser Plan, während Figaro sich auf eine stattliche Belohnung freut („All’idea di quel metallo“).

Rosina denkt über die Stimme nach, die sie entzückt hat, und beschliesst, ihre nicht unerhebliche Schlauheit zu nutzen, um Lindoro kennenzulernen („Una voce poco fa“). Dr. Bartolo tritt zusammen mit Rosinas Musiklehrer Don Basilio auf, der ihn warnt, dass Graf Almaviva, der Verehrer Rosinas, in Sevilla gesehen worden ist. Dr. Bartolo beschliesst, Rosina unverzüglich zu heiraten. Basilio singt ein Loblied auf die üble Nachrede, da dies die beste Methode sei, Almaviva loszuwerden („La calunnia“). Figaro belauscht diese Unterhaltung, warnt Rosina und verspricht ihr, einen Brief an Lindoro zu übergeben („Dunque io son“). Da er Rosina nicht traut, versucht Dr. Bartolo zu beweisen, dass sie einen Brief geschrieben hat, aber sie überlistet ihn mehrfach. Dr. Bartolo ärgert sich über ihren Widerstand und warnt sie, nicht mit ihm zu spielen („A un dottor della mia sorte“).

Almaviva tritt in seiner Verkleidung als betrunkener Soldat auf und steckt Rosina ein Briefchen zu, das diese geschickt vor Dr. Bartolo verbirgt. Der alte Herr behauptet, er sei von jeglicher Einquartierung befreit. Figaro verkündet, dass sich vor dem Haus eine Menge angesammelt habe, die sich über die Geräusche von drinnen wundere. Die zivile Wache stürmt herein, um den betrunkenen Soldaten festzunehmen. Graf Almaviva enthüllt dem Hauptmann der Wache jedoch seine wahre Identität und wird sofort freigelassen. Alle ausser Figaro sind höchst erstaunt über diese Wendung der Dinge, und gemeinsam kommentieren sie die verrückten Ereignisse des Morgens.

ZWEITER AKT. Dr. Bartolo vermutet, dass der „betrunkene Soldat“ ein von Almaviva entsandter Spion war. Der Graf kehrt zurück, diesmal verkleidet als Don Alonso, angeblich Musiklehrer und Student von Don Basilio („Pace e gioia sia con voi“). Er sei gekommen, um Rosina ihre Musikstunde zu geben, da Basilio krank zuhause sei. „Don Alonso“ erzählt Dr. Bartolo ausserdem, dass er im selben Gasthof wohne wie Almaviva und einen Brief von Rosina gefunden habe. Er bietet an, Rosina zu sagen, dass er den Brief von einer anderen Frau bekommen habe, als Beweis, dass Lindoro nur im Auftrag Almavivas mit ihren Gefühlen spiele. Dies überzeugt Dr. Bartolo davon, dass „Don Alonso“ wirklich ein Student von Don Basilio ist, und er erlaubt ihm, Rosina ihre Musikstunde zu erteilen („Contro un cor“).

Figaro erscheint, um Dr. Bartolo zu rasieren, und schafft es, den Schlüssel zur Balkontür einzustecken. Er setzt gerade zu seiner Rasur an, als Basilio in scheinbar bester Gesundheit hereinkommt. Der Graf, Rosina und Figaro überzeugen Basilio mittels wiederholter Bestätigungen und eines schnellen Bestechungsgelds, dass er Scharlach habe („Buona sera, mi signore“). Basilio geht wieder nach Hause, zwar verwirrt, aber reicher als vorher. Die Rasur beginnt nun, und Figaro lenkt Dr. Bartolo ab, damit er nicht hört, wie Almaviva mit Rosina plant, in der kommenden Nacht zusammen zu fliehen. Dr. Bartolo jedoch hört die Worte „meine Verkleidung“ und begreift wütenderweise, dass er schon wieder ausgetrickst wurde. Alle gehen. Die Zofe Berta kommentiert den verrückten Haushalt, in dem sie arbeitet („Il vecchiotto cerca moglie“).

Basilio wird gerufen und mit ihm ein Notar, damit Dr. Bartolo sich noch am selben Abend mit Rosina vermählen kann. Dr. Bartolo zeigt darauf Rosina ihren Brief an Lindoro. Gebrochenen Herzens und überzeugt, dass sie getäuscht wurde, willigt sie in die Ehe mit Dr. Bartolo ein, und erzählt ihm auch von ihrem Plan, mit Lindoro zu fliehen. Ein Sturm zieht über das Haus. Figaro und der Graf klettern über die Gartenmauer. Rosina ist wütend, bis Almaviva seine wahre Identität enthüllt. Basilio kommt mit dem Notar an. Nachdem er mit einem wertvollen Ring bestochen wurde und ihm ausserdem ein Paar Kugeln in den Kopf angedroht wurden, willigt Basilio ein, bei der Trauung von Rosina und Almaviva als Zeuge zu fungieren. Dr. Bartolo platzt mit einigen Soldaten herein, aber er kommt zu spät. Graf Almaviva erklärt Dr. Bartolo, dass alle Proteste nutzlos seien („Cessa di più resistere“), und Dr. Bartolo erkennt seine Niederlage an. Figaro, Rosina und der Graf feiern ihr Glück.

Der neuste Disney Erfolg • Set against the vast and mysterious landscape of China, the story of 'Mulan' begins with two concurrent and colliding events. On the country's remote border, delineated by the imposing Great Wall, the ruthless Hun leader, Shan-Yu, and his army have launched an invasion of China. The country's beloved Emperor responds to this threat with a declaration that one man from every family must serve in the Imperial Army and sends his dutiful aide Chi Fu to carry out the order.

Meanwhile, in a distant village, Mulan, the only child of the Fa family, is getting ready for a fateful meeting with the Matchmaker. Society dictates that she should marry in order to bring honor to the family and Mulan desperately wants to please her parents. But she is a free-spirit who doesn't quite fit the traditional mold. Her mother, Fa Li, and Grandmother Fa help her primp and prep for the meeting, but things go badly for Mulan when her good luck cricket, Cri-Kee, gets loose and triggers a series of unlucky mishaps. The Matchmaker is not pleased and sends Mulan away in disgrace.

Back home, a dejected Mulan is comforted by her understanding father, Fa Zhou, who tells her that some of the most beautiful blossoms are late bloomers. Their conversation is interrupted, however, by the arrival of Chi Fu who has come to deliver the Emperor's pronouncement. As the only male member of the Fa family, Mulan's father unhesitatingly steps forward to accept his obligation when his name is called. Mulan tries to intervene, knowing that this conscription will mean certain death for her ailing father, but her protests go unheeded.

That evening, Mulan searches deep within herself and realizes what she must do. She will defy tradition and take her father's place in the army. Preparing a daring disguise, she shears her hair, dons his battle armor and bravely sets out under the cover of darkness on her faithful horse, Khan, to join the army.

Ray Liotta & Jason Patric • When a drug bust goes awry and a pregnant woman is shot, undercover narcotics officer Nick Tellis (Jason Patric) is suspended from the Detroit Police Force. With a baby of his own and a wife who has seen him tortured by the horrific incident, Tellis is not anxious to go back onto the force, but he doesn't know any other kind of work that can fulfill him. Now it is eighteen months after his suspension, and Tellis is brought before a review board and told he is needed to help crack a homicide case. A rookie undercover officer has been killed, and if Tellis takes on the assignment and apprehends a suspect, he is told he can have the assignment of his choosing and all the charges against him will be dismissed. Es hat sich innerhalb weniger Jahre in der nationalen und internationalen Festivallandschaft etabliert. In diesem Jahr verwandeln wir Zürich zum siebten Mal für elf Tage in eine Filmhauptstadt, um die Filmkunst in all ihren Facetten zu feiern!

Das Zurich Film Festival setzt sich zum Ziel, einem grossen Publikum Einblick in das Schaffen junger, aufkommender Filmemacher aus aller Welt zu ermöglichen und den Austausch zwischen arrivierten Filmschaffenden, jungen Talenten und dem Publikum zu fördern.

In vier internationalen Wettbewerben konkurrieren junge Filmemacher um den Hauptpreis, das Goldene Auge. Ausserhalb der Wettbewerbe präsentieren wir neue Filme renommierter Filmemacher als "Gala Premieren" und "Special Screenings". In der Sektion „Neue Welt Sicht“ legen wir den Fokus auf das aktuelle Filmschaffen einer aufblühenden Filmregion. Bisherige Gastländer waren Russland (2007), Israel (2008), Argentinien (2009) und Australien (2010).

Zahlreiche Rahmenprogramme und Parties laden Filmschaffende und filmbegeisterte Besucher dazu ein, sich über das Gesehene auszutauschen und den Kinotag in entspannter Atmosphäre ausklingen zu lassen.
